Is Venus The Best Ever At Wimbledon?

Venus Williams had a very disappointing ending to the most recent major, that being the recently competed French Open. Williams, one of the favorites to win the whole thing, or at least appear in the finals, was ousted unceremoniously in the fourth round. Although the result was disappointing, Williams now must look ahead to the next major, Wimbledon, where she may once again find herself in the role of the odds on favorite. And with good reason, as Williams just may be the best woman’s tennis player in Wimbledon history.

Williams won her first Wimbledon title 10 years ago, in 2000. It was perhaps the best run she ever had in a Grand Slam tournament, to date. In that tournament, she beat then favorite Martina Hingis, in a 3 set classic, something not many expected at the time. After beating Hingis, she went on to win the title, ousting her sister Serena and then knocking off Lindsay Davenport to take home her first Wimbledon championship.

Venus returned the next season with a vengeance, ripping through the 2001 without even being challenged once. She defeated Justine Henin, who at the time was just emerging as a major force on the tour. She defeated her with ease, as Henin did not win a single game in the matchup. It took Venus a little bit of time to win her next Wimbledon title, a 4 year layoff, that featured Serena win a couple of the titles in between. But Venus was back with a purpose in the 2005 tournament. She defeated Lindsay Davenport again in the 2005 final, a rematch of the 2000 final, a match that did not disappoint, as many remember that as one of the greatest matches in women’s tennis history. Venus would win the title again in 2007 over Marion Bartoli. The 2007 final was notable as Venus was the lowest ranked champion to ever win Wimbledon in the Open Era.

French Open Women’s Semi Final Betting

Day twelve at Roland Garros sees the Semi Final matches between the final four players left in the Women’s tournament. Who will be playing in Saturday’s final? BetRepublic.com previews both matches here:

Elena Dementieva v Francesca Schiavone Tennis Betting:
The bookmakers are having a hard time determining who will be the player that progresses to the French Open final with both PaddyPower.com and William Hill having odds of 5/6 for both Dementieva and Schiavone to win the match. It looks like it’ll be a close match, but will it be the fifth or seventeenth seed that progresses to the final?

After a relatively easy route through the tournament, Dementieva came across Nadia Petrova in the Quarter Finals. Petrova had defeated Venus Williams in round four and started the Quarter Final match with great confidence and won the first set in an injury broken sixty-two minutes. From there, however, things went downhill for the nineteenth seed as Dementieva got into her stride and won the next two sets 6-2, 6-0 to book her Semi Final place. She will need to perform like she did in those final two sets to progress to the final, but will Dementieva be able to?

Australian Open- Nadal Retires; Hennin Advances to Semis

Rafael Nadal definitely didn’t have a good day on Tuesday. Playing in the quarterfinals against Andy Murray, the Spaniard re-injured his knee and decided to retire from the tournament in the third set of the game; he was losing 6-3, 7-6 (2), 3-0. This is the second time that Nadal has had to retire from a major tournament because of knee problems. Knee tendinitis had pushed him off of the courts for at least one month after Wimbledon. As a result, he was excluded from the Roland Garros final last year. The problem seems to be back; Nadal required medical assistance in the third game of the third set, after which he decided to exit not only the game, but the tournament as well. Nor did he refer to the problem after the game. His uncle, Tony Nadal, told the press that the player would make a statement after being submitted to several scans and MRIs in Spain, when his doctor would be able to examine him more thoroughly. For Murray, the early exit was a little disappointing; the Scott was playing a great game, not realizing that Nadal was suffering from knee pain. “When the big moments came in the match, I thought I dictated what happened on the court,” Murray said.

Australian Open- Nadal And Del Potro Continue to The Third Run; Henin’s Return Has Been Amazing

Wednesday was a great day for Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro, both playing in the second round of the Australian Open. Both finished with victories over their opponents, Lukas Lacko and James Blake, respectively. Rafa seemed to have control of the match from the beginning. Lacko committed 53 unforced errors; he managed to save two of three match points in the third set when the score was 5-2, but he then lost the set and so the match in three straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. “I played a serious match. I think I played the match what I need to play,” said Nadal, who is No. 2 in the World Ranking. “I was playing, moving well in the beginning without mistakes, having with the control of the ball.” Nadal will be facing Philipp Kohlschreiber for the third round of the tournament. Juan Martin del Potro, on the other hand, had a very difficult match against the American, James Blake. The match lasted more than four hours before the Argentine finally won it, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. Neither of the players was able to break serve in the first four sets. Del Potro finally had an opportunity in the fifth set at 6-5 but Blake broke him back immediately when the Argentine committed 2 unforced errors. Del Potro then demonstrated his abilities, breaking Blake when they were 9-8 to serve back again and finish the set with a big serve for his first match point. It was terrible for the American, who made an incredible effort against del Potro; Blake may have deserved a win as much as did his opponent, but in the end his mistakes cost him the match.

ATP Tennis Novak Djokovic defeats Thomas Berdych at ATP World Tour Finals

Novak Djokovic had a sore spot ever since he fell to Czech Thomas Berdych during the Wimbledon semifinals in July. But it is now payback time, as the talented Djokovic brought in his A-game to the 02 Arena in London in his first match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals round-robin stage to defeat Berdych in a 6-3, 6-3 matchup. Djokovic knows his way around this tournament. He had a great tournament during the 2008 season when we went all the way to capture the season finale at Shanghai. In the 2008 final Djokovic went face to face with Nikolay Davydenko and won 6-1, 7-5. The following year, when the tournament made its move from Shanghai to London, Davydenko was able to step up and win the tournament playing the final against Argentine Juan Martín del Potro by 6-3, 6-4. The ATP World Tour Final is certainly a very different tournament. Contrary to most any other professional ATP sanctioned tournament, the World Tour is not played based on a single elimination knockout stage.
